Sixteen years ago, when I went to New York City for City University of New York Baruch graduate school business program for three months before dropped out, I read from the MBA program assigned textbook of Prentice Hall's "The Organizational Behavior Reader, 1996 edition", of several paragraphs from J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter clips. I was not familiar with it, but not my classmates. My Marketing program professor suggested us to subscribe to the New York Times, and adviser and the Organizational Behavior associate professor informed us that some contents in the textbook could be from auxiliary materials where we could buy ourselves from bookstores. There was a Barnes & Noble bookstore catching the eye in the city, which was the backdrop of 1998 Hollywood movie "You've Got Mail" starring by Meg Ryan. Baruch College also had its own bookstore partnered with "Staples". In the meantime the Clintonistas of White House staffs were talking about their one-editor tabloid, sold one dollar a piece, had a new editor of their new boss Mr Jerry Brown in 1996. He granted to take up the job. That tabloid helped the student's reading. When at that time I first got my hand on these paragraphs excerpted from J.K. Rowling's novel or from the Sunday newspaper, just like the TOEFL exam articles, several names of the protagonists of her novel appeared at once without any clue, therefore it was surely slow to uptake, at least for me. But they said in the meantime there were television dramas and cartoons flashes, playing about it. That is, easy uptake for other students. Actually, the Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets was published by the USA for J.K. Rowling's second novel in 1998.

What is "The Chamber of Secrets" described in the novel? On page 300 of the novel, J.K. Rowling narrated, "It looked like an ordinary sink. They examined every inch of it, inside and out, including the pipes below. And then Harry saw it: Scratched on the side of one of the copper taps was a tiny snake."…"'Open up,' he said. He looked at Ron, who shook his head. 'English', he said. Harry looked back at the snake, willing himself to believe it was alive…'Open up', he said. Except that the words weren't what he heard; a strange hissing had escaped him, and at once the tap glowed a brilliant white light and began to spin. Next second, the sink began to move; the sink, in fact, sank, right out of sight, leaving a large pipe exposed, a pipe wide enough for a man to slide into."
In the 1987 Hollywood movie "The Witches of Eastwick", the last scene was swarms of infant babies crawling toward the big silver screen, where their imprint mothers playing cellos to compete with their tuxedo leadership imprint fathers. Is the woman without an equal when it is coming to baby-sit an infant? Some men would be eager to challenge it. And you can use your illusion to comprehend these passages.

In the Chamber of Secrets, Harry fought a duel with Tom Riddle and his diary(or Ginny's diary) to save Ginny Weasley. Harry must kill the King of Serpent, the basilisk, with Fawkes, a phoenix, and an old school Sorting Hat. Finally Harry seized the basilisk fang thrusting into the heart of Riddle's diary to win the duel, well matched the scar on Harry's forehead, the emblem of the heir of Slytherin, a snake. The Harry Potter series were novels written by J.K. Rowling for the children. But the story lines were fit into the modern world of the adult, or when the children had read the novel grew up and read the novel again, they would find something new. For example, Fawkes phoenix was a songbird, that is, a female singer, with Harry's friend Ron and professor together went down to the chamber of secrets, assisting Harry to fight the serpent and Riddle's diary. That was a large pipe in Myrtle's bathroom, um, a girl's toilet. And you know Ginny is the diminutive of Virginia, and Hermione is for Greek "Earthly", Granger is Middle French "Farmer." Also we can find in the legends of King Arthur and the Round Table Knights, Wizard Merlin ever repelled an assassin by himself. The sword hid in the old school sorting hat helps explain for this legend.

Under-The-Dome

ReviewReviewReviewReview Under The Dome
Category: Books
Genre: Literature & Fiction
Author: Stephen King
Under the Dome, by Stephen King, Scribner, November 2009

"Hoard a penny and lose a dollar(page 1022)," Stephen King writes in his 2009 novel "Under the Dome, "The survival-watchman inside thought seventy-two hours was seventy-two hours, and every minute of those seventy-two hours counts...It was seventy-two hours if it was the two of them. But if it was just him, he could stretch it to ninety or maybe even a hundred(page 1023)." I checked out this novel from New Taipei City Library on May 14, and until now on June 9 in 26 days, uses around seventy-three hours and finally finished this novel, Under the Dome. I think that it's not bad.

In the opening of this novel, besides a map of Chester's Mill in Maine, there are three pages of 63 characters listed. This is a little like the Case Study of Harvard Business Review magazine Chinese edition which will give the organization chart with names on it. With these 63 characters the story lines in this novel "Under the Dome" are complex. If we try to pin down the whole novel with a single story line, we could find that the methods Stephen King used to lay out all his characters in the novel are the following:
First, shifting positions;
Second, interchange character's gender;
Third, a character brings out the defining theme by shortly decease, say, for a total page's discussion;
Fourth, citing the popular words or celebrity comments;
Fifth, using collective memories such as popular music, movie narratives, etc.

Further details of these five methods found in the novel:
1.The character shifting position method, for example, on page 974, "Conree clapped her hand to the back of her neck as if stung, went facedown into the grass, kicked twice, and was still. The other one--a bald guy--made it to the rear of the studio. Chef didn't care too much about the pair who'd run for the woods, but he didn't want to let Baldy get away. If Baldy got around the corner of the building..."
Character Conree could be deemed as the same character of Rory appeared on page 210 who drove the ATV to shoot the Dome, with the final sentence describing that, "A blind child had shown him the way," because the bullet ricocheted back and hit himself. "Lester pried away the boy's hands and saw the red, welling socket. The remains of the eye itself were dangling on Rory's cheek. As he turned his head up to Lester, the splattered remains plopped into the grass."

2.The interchange character's gender method, for example, on page 562, '"Piper Libby lowered herself carefully in front of the altar of the First Congo Church...holding her recently dislocated left arm against her side." Page 566, "No matter what she says, this is too many people. Losing my job like Marty is one thing. I could deal with that, the pay sucks, anyway. Getting Jim Rennie mad at me, though..." She shook her head. "Not a good idea." "It isn't too many," Piper said. "It's just the right number. Mr Burpee, can you keep a secret?"'
What Jackie she mentioned in above conversation of a man called Marty who loses job, Marty could be found on another depicting on page 441 and page 442, "One of the older gentlemen who had been running tests approached the Dome. He was holding his gas mask by the strap." "So do most of the scientists working on this right now--if we can be said to be working when we're not actually doing anything. It's the Sherlock Rule: When you eliminate the impossible, the answer, no matter how improbable, is what remains."
Although Marty is said to be one of the gentlemen, but judging by the companionship with Reverend Pipper Libby and Jim Rennie, Marty should be a SHE to say that Sherlock Rule.

3.Rory is only mentioned at the beginning of this novel but setting the theme.

4.Words on page 922, "Kids?" "My wife," "She was the first Dome casualty," are said by France President Mr Nicolas Sarkozy.

5.Although we are doubting on page 442 if the character Marty who said the Sherlock Rule is a female character, but Marty is the name of protagonist in Hollywood movie Back To The Future, which invoked collective memories.

"Ants without a hill; Bees without a hive."
Page 922,
"Kids?" Andy asked. He wouldn't be surprised. When the devil got a preacher, he was apt to fall low, indeed. Low enough to put on a tophat and crawl under a rattlesnake...
"My wife," Andy said. "She was the first Dome casualty."

"Go ahead, but don't spill!"

HALLOWEEN COMES EARLY
Page 944,
"What kind of luck did you have?"
"The bad kind. I talked to Officer Everett. Ex-Officer Everett. The others are in the breeze."
"Does she know anything?"
"No. She hasn't heard from the doc. And Wettington treated her like a mushroom, kept her in the dark and fed her shit."
Page 955,
Henry points to the Dinsmore dairy barn. "Plenty of shade there."
"It's a quarter of a mile away!" Lennie says indignantly.
Page 966,
"Big Jim is a selectman, Feddy. I'm the Police Chief..."
Page 977,
Andy circled his tree as it came, always keeping the oak between him and the truck. It stopped...Andy had no intention of letting them blindside The Chef.
He emerged from behind the tree and began walking straight up the middle of the driveway, CLAUDETTE held across his chest in the port arms position...
He raise the Kalashnikov, but made himself wait. "Let them bunch together, if they are going to."
...Andy popped the clip as Chef Bushey had taught him...

under the dome

This Monday I used my recently renewed New Taipei City Library Card to check out Stephen King’s Nov. 2009 novel “Under the Dome” for 30 days to read the 1072 pages plus 2 pages of author brief. I have read 251 pages up to yesterday.

Most impressive characters up to this 251 pages is the Town Kids called Rory Dinsmore. He took a ride of the ATV with handlebars to go around the hill several hundred yards from his father’s farm house, with a double barreled 0.30 rifle with a box of grains from shelf called XPs reloaded. Sounds like Microsoft’s Windows software product or IBM’s Thinkpad series in the years. For general farmers and alike us ordinary students in those years, that may refer to the price was a little expensive but with premium quality.

Rory splayed his hand and aimed the two barreled rifle at three dead sparrows near the hill, of kind of a C.S.I. spot when “the Dome” appears. The investigating guard had just faced the protested turnout and tried to stop him but the only Reverend seen with Lester’s shirttail out and flying, then hi-impact slug struck the Dome dead on ricocheted, and what scurrying off into the high grass and made the splatters of blood on the hardwood. If only we had a high school midterm exam, I guess this could be sort of the “cloze test”. Sort of, not sore of. See, saw, sore. Sort of. How you got to sharpen the saw when you are Under the Dome, or whatever, Under the Dorm of dormitory days? First to understand and then to be understood, and then? Not forgotten. What I remembered in those days was that kind of local quarrels sounded on campus in the dorm days. Therefore the dorm days under the dome was doomed to be flunked, wasn’t it a good cloze test? The Pixie Light and Pixie Dark characters in Stephen King’s previous novel Cell could not agree more, I think. Or maybe we could find that in a state local gazette, when we all know the reverend father struck a blow on the short figure. We are different not that you say it was difficult recently. We were not different since the salvation hero turned out on the street corner. My life became different since you came. Don’t you agree with me upon this point?

Harry Potter and the order of the Phoenix

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, 2003 J.K. Rowling, Scholastic Inc.

What is the Order of the Phoenix? We can take an investigating look into J.K. Rowling's novel in the Chapter Five, "The Order of The Phoenix."
First is the words said by Sirius, "...at least you've been able to get out and about, stretch your legs, get into a few fights...I've been stuck inside for a month...There's not much I can do for the Order of the Phoenix."
-(A)---Obviously the Order is some kind of static activities which Sirius doesn't like.

Then is Harry asking Sirius, "how come he's in the order?"
"He's useful...also very loyal."
The third is Harry describing his status, "I asked Ron and Hermione but they said we're not allowed in the Order."
"And they're quite right," said Mrs. Weasley. "You're too young."
-(B)---Children and adolescents are receiving more respect in the west society. Sometimes they have suits and ties just like their adults' counterpart. They would be also addressed as "Sir", or "Junior".

"Since when did someone have to be in the Order of the Phoenix to ask questions?" asked Sirius.
"Harry's been trapped in that Muggle house for a month. He's got the right to know what's been happen..."
"You've too young, you're not in the Order," said Fred, "Harry's not even of age!"
"It's not my fault you haven't been told what the Order's doing," said Sirius calmly.
"He's not a member of the Order of the Phoenix!" said Mrs. Weasley.
"He's only fifteen and--"
"--and he's dealt with as much as most in the Order," said Sirius.
"Are you kidding?" said Bill incredulously.
"Dumbledore was the only one You-Know-Who was ever scared of!"
"Thanks to you, Dumbledore was able to recall the Order of the Phoenix about an hour after Voldemort returned," said Sirius.
"So what's the Order been doing?" said Harry.
-(C)---Knowledge is Power", as Francis Bacon said. When Bill asking to confirm that You-Know-Who was ever scared of the Headmaster Dumbledore, the learned scholar, the answer is that Dumbledore was able to recall the Order of the Phoenix about an hour after Voldemort returned.

"Working as hard as we can to make sure Voldemort can't carry out his plans," said Sirius.
"Tonks here, for one--she's too young to have been in the Order of the Phoenix last time."
"Didn't you see the Daily Prophet last week? They reported that he'd been voted out...and they're talking about talking away his Order of Merlin, First Class, too."
...she looked at Sirius, "You've given Harry plenty of information. Any more and you might just as well induct him into the Order straightaway."
"Why not?" said Harry quickly.
"I'll join, I want to join. I want to fight--"
"No"
It was not Mrs. Weasley who spoke this time, but Lupin.
"The Order is comprised only of overage wizards," he said.
"Wizards who have left school," he added.
-(D)---Kind of, sort of saying that wizards are not the best, not only left school, but just like dropouts from schools, whatever reasons they have left school.

The Hunger Games

The Hunger Games, novel reading;

Catnip

Katniss loves her sister Prim very much, even volunteers to be the tribute of District 12 to replace Prim because the twelve-year-old Prim is selected in the 74 Hunger Games as tribute. The sibling alike love also appears in Chapter 15 for another girl from District 11 called Rue, who spent quite a lot of time getting along with Katniss in the tree by the river, talking to mockingjay, chewing and spreading the herb on the injured calf of Katniss, a girl with Thresh from District 11. Rue in Chapter 18 is killed by a boy from District 1 by the spear. There are also some descriptions of the selecting of these young tributes:

Primrose

“…You become eligible for the reaping the day you turn twelve.
That year, your name is entered once.
At thirteen, twice.
And so on and so on until you reach the age of eighteen,
the final year of eligibility,
when your name goes into the pool seven times…
So, at the age of twelve,
I had my name entered four times.
Once because I had to,
and three times for tessae for grain and oil for myself,
Prim and my mother…
So now, at the age of sixteen,
my name will be in the reaping twenty times.
Gale, who is eighteen and has been either helping or single-handedly feeding a family of five for seven years,
will have his name in forty-two times.”

The Hunger Games novel of Suzanne Collins, Book One, has 27 chapters, and in the Seventy-fourth Hunger Games, two victors from District 12, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, in the Chapter 25 of the novel have already won the 74th hunger game. The remained two chapters, in the Chapter 26 it is dedicated to describe the Post Trauma Stress Disorder(PTSD) alike reaction of Katniss when she sees the doctors working on Peeta through the glass, and listens to the suggestion from Haymitch (about how to talk to the public or the press),
"Your only defense can be you were so madly in love you weren't responsible for your actions."

But we can see that Katniss is in doubt in her own conscious words that,
"I can't pull off the girl-driven-crazy-by-love scenario Haymitch has suggested."

Scylla and Charybdis

That will be like caught between the Scylla and Charybdis a situation for Katniss to choose her own strategy.

burnt bread

The final chapter in Chapter 27 collects small details about daily life of the bread winners and lovers, also in words of Katniss that “dreading the moment when I will finally have to let go.”

Dan Brown, Deception Point

Glaciologist Wailee Ming was one of the four President leading civilian scientists.
From the GPR(Ground Penetrating Radar) device printout, Wailee Ming was found to slip in the extraction shaft, flowing down the ice tunnel. It seemed that someone drilled in the bottom of the shaft, the scientist holding the PODS desity scan printout exclaimed in a rage.

But when did Mr Wailee Ming slip into the brine saltwater of the extraction pit? After explaining to Rachel that Antartica has penguin and the Artic has polar bear? Definitely that was brine saltwater upon glacier but not on earth in New York State. And how did he fall into that brine water? As we know when Ms Rachel with F14 Tomcat vertically leaving that spot, what the scientist talked make the point of deception.
